IRVING, Texas - Senior Seth Gearhart and sophomore Marcus Jackson each earned a place on the 2014-15 Conference USA All-Academic team, the league office announced on Friday. The Owl duo is joined on the team by FIU's Kris Gulley, Marshall's Austin Loop, Old Dominion's Trey Freeman and UTSA's Jeromie Hill.
Gearhart is the only two-time member on this year's squad as he earned the honor in 2012-13 as well. The team was selected from nominees with at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average that have reached sophomore standing and are regular contributors on the court for their teams.
Gearhart leads the Owls with 15.6 points per game on 45.3 percent shooting with a 40.6 percent clip from downtown and 81.5 percent mark at the foul line. He ranks second on the team with 5.3 rebounds per game. The 2014 NABC Honors Court member has also been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of his seasons. He was named a 2014 Rice Honor Student and a 2015 Rice Scholar Athlete. The senior ranks among league leaders in six statistical categories and was one of 30 national candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. He was named C-USA Player of the Week on Feb. 16 after notching a career-high 32 points in the Owls' win over UAB. Gearhart is majoring in Economics with a business minor.
Jackson ranks second on the team and 13th in C-USA with 14.0 points per game. The sophomore shoots 39.4 percent from the field, 37.9 percent from downtown and 82.7 percent at the foul line. His 2.76 assists per game rank 15th in the league and his 2.59 three-pointers per game stand third. Jackson has scored 20 or more points in eight games this season to tie for fourth in the league. He is a two-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll member. Jackson has yet to declare a major within the Social Sciences division.
The pair combined for 48 points and 11 three-pointers in Rice's win at UTSA on Thursday evening. Rice closes out the regular season on Saturday at UTEP. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. CT at the Don Haskins Center.
