March 4, 2013
HOUSTON, Texas – Max Guercy averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals in two games last week to earn his fifth Conference USA Freshman of the Week honor, the league office announced on Monday. UAB’s Rod Rucker was named the league’s Player of the Week.
Guercy shot 5-of-10 on three-pointers and sank 8-of-9 free throws on the week to earn his fourth accolade in the last six weeks. It is the second time this season he has been honored in back-to-back weeks.
The point guard battled foul trouble early on in Rice’s Wednesday game at SMU. The Arleta, Calif. native bounced back in the second half of the game, notching 13 of his 16 points after halftime. He added four assists, four steals and three rebounds in the effort.
On Saturday against UTEP, Guercy sank three first-half three-pointers and led Rice with a season-high six rebounds en route to 11 points with three assists and a pair of steals on the afternoon.
Guercy ranks second for the Owls in scoring with 10.2 points per game and ranks in the league’s top three among freshmen in five different categories, including assists (2.5), steals (1.5) and three-point shooting (40.5).
Rice travels a short distance on Wednesday to take on Houston at Hofheinz Pavilion. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. as the Owls seek a season sweep before returning home on Saturday for the regular season finale against Tulsa. Rice will honor senior Tamir Jackson prior to the 7 p.m. contest.
