HOUSTON, Texas - Rice University men’s basketball hosts UTEP on Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. against the Miners.
It is the second meeting between the teams this season after the Miners (15-12, 8-5) pulled out a 65-53 win in El Paso in early February. Tamir Jackson led Rice with 12 points in the game, while Max Guercy added 11 and Austin Ramljak also scored in double figures with 10 points.
The Owls (5-22, 1-12) are home for one game, but all three of Rice’s remaining regular season games are in Houston.
Rice traveled to SMU earlier this week and put up a strong second-half effort to attempt to overcome foul trouble, but ultimately fell short in a 67-55 setback against the Mustangs.
Scouting the Miners
UTEP snapped a two-game skid with a home win against Houston, 63-53, on Wednesday night.
Three players score in double figures for the balanced offensive attack, led by Julian Washburn’s 11.5 points per game.
John Bohannon adds 11.1 points and a team-leading 6.4 rebounds per contest. He tallied 24 points and 17 rebounds in the recent win over Houston.
Jacques Streeter averages 5.0 assists per game and leads the league with a 3.24 assist-to-turnover ratio.
The Miners boast the top scoring defense in Conference USA, allowing just 60.8 points per game.
UTEP holds a 15-11 lead in 26 all-time meetings after last month’s
Rice swept the series last season with a 77-75 home win on a Julian DeBose buzzer-beater on Feb. 1, then followed with a 68-61 victory in El Paso later in the month.
In three meetings, DeBose averages 5.0 points and 2.7 rebounds against UTEP.
Jackson has faced the Miners six times and averages 6.5 points per game with more than three assists per meetings.
Guercy (11) and Ramljak (10) scored in double figures in their first game against UTEP in February.
Rice travels across town in search of a season sweep against Houston on Wednesday. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Owls then conclude the regular season at home on Saturday, March 9, against Tulsa. The Senior Day contest tips off at 7 p.m.
