UTEP's Hot Shooting Dooms Owls in 80-62 Loss
UTEP shot 71.4% in the second half, including 80.0% from three, as Rice fell, 80-62, Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center.


HOUSTON -- Rice begins the final weekend of the regular season this Thursday, Mar. 1, when it hosts UTEP. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and the game will be livestreamed FloSports.com.

Scouting Rice
• Rice is 6-23 on the year and 3-13 in Conference USA. The Owls fell at FIU last Saturday, 67-64.
• Junior guard Connor Cashaw is 10th in Conference USA in scoring (15.8) and eighth in rebounding (6.9). He also leads the team with 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals, just one of six players in the country to lead the team in all four categories.
• Sophomore guard Ako Adams is second on the team with 10.2 points while grabbing 2.6 boards. He is also second on the team with 3.2 assists.
• Freshman Malik Osborne is second on the team in rebounding with 6.3 boards while adding 9.0 points.
• The Owls are averaging 68.2 points per game while allowing 75.8.
• Rice is connecting on just 40.7% from the floor and 32.1% from three. Its opponents are shooting 44.7% from the field and 35.1% from beyond the arc.
• The Owls are being outrebounded, 37.4-to-36.5.
• Head coach Scott Pera is in his first season leading the Rice men's basketball program after serving its last three years as its Associate Head Coach.

Scouting UTEP
• UTEP enters tonight's game with a 10-18 record and 5-11 in Conference USA. The Miners have won two straight and three of their last four after defeating Southern Miss last Saturday, 73-44.
• Senior guard Omega Harris leads the team with 11.4 points per game and 2.0 assists.
• Graduate guard Keith Frazier is second on the team with 11.0 points.
• Senior center Matt Willms is second on the team with 5.5 rebounds while adding 9.0 points.
• Freshman guard Kobe Magee is fifth in the league in three-point field goal percentage (.443) and freshman guard Evan Gilyard is seventh in free throw percentage (.828).
• UTEP is scoring 67.8 points per game and is allowing 70.9.
• The Miners are connecting on 43.5% from the field and just 33.7% from three. Their opponents are connecting on just 42.9% from the floor but 35.9% from beyond the arc.
• UTEP is being outrebounded, 38.0-to-33.6.
• Interim head coach Phil Johnson is in his first season at the helm of the UTEP men's basketball program, where he holds a 9-13 (.409) record. In five years as a head coach, Johnson is 40-96 (.294).

Series History
• Rice and UTEP will meet for the second time this year and the 35th time overall.
• UTEP holds a 23-11 lead in the series and has won 19 of the last 23 meetings, including the last nine.
• The teams also met on Dec. 30 in El Paso with the Owls falling, 80-62.
• The series is tied at seven when played in Houston, but UTEP has won the last three.
• Rice is looking for its first victory over the Miners since Feb. 29, 2012.
