Evans led Rice to a pair of wins over Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech. He averaged 21.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals while connecting on 21-of-23 (91.3%) from the free throw line.
The sophomore began the week by helping Rice to a 72-71 overtime victory over Southern Miss. Evans scored 16 points while grabbing five rebounds. His layup with 1.9 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Owls the victory.
The Chesapeake, Va., native followed that up with a game-high 26 points and four rebounds in an 88-81 victory over Louisiana Tech, snapping the Bulldogs’ seven-game winning streak and giving Rice 20 wins for the first time since 2003-04 and just the eighth time in school history. Evans connected on 15-of-16 from the free throw line, the fifth-most made free throws in school history.
With 26 points, he became the Rice sophomore scoring leader while also recording a pair of steals to become the 12th player in school history with 1,000 points, 200 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals.
