Men's Hoops Opens Road Trip at Charlotte

Late Basket Lifts Charlotte Past Men's Basketball
In the seniors' final home game, it was the underclassmen that shined for Rice University men's basketball as sophomore Marcus Jackson scored 21 points and freshman Bishop Mency added a season-best 20. Unfortunately for the Owls, Charlotte spoiled the evening with a go-ahead basket in the final seconds to claim a 77-76 win in front of 4,653 fans at Tudor Fieldhouse on Saturday night.


Series History
• Rice and Charlotte will meet for just the fourth time ever.
• The Owls hold a 2-1 record in the series.
• Rice won the only other meeting in Charlotte, a 73-68 overtime decision last year.
• Last year, the teams split the series.
• This will be the first of two meetings this year with Charlotte visiting South Main on Mar. 3.

Scouting Rice
• Rice enters today's game with an 8-15 record and is 3-7 in Conference USA after defeating Southern Miss last Saturday night, 72-65.
• Freshman Marcus Evans is third in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 19.7 points per game. He leads the league lead in steals (2.0), is eighth in minutes played (32.9) and 10th in free throw percentage (.776).
• Redshirt sophomore Egor Koulechov is sixth in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.0 points while leading the team with 7.1 rebounds, which is ninth in the league. He is second in C-USA in free throw percentage (.859), third in three-pointers made (2.6) and fourth in minutes played (33.9).
• Freshman Marquez Letcher-Ellis is third on the team with 10.4 points and second with 532 rebounds. He is also sixth in C-USA with 1.2 blocks.
• Senior Max Guercy is averaging 8.2 points. He leads the league and is fourth in the country in free throw percentage (.901), is third in assists (5.3) and sixth in minutes played (33.5).
• Rice is averaging 76.0 points per game while allowing 80.4.
• The Owls are connecting on 43.7% from the field and just 31.1% from the three-point line while allowing 48.8% from the field and 40.1% from beyond the arc.
• Rice leads Conference USA in free throw percentage, connecting on 74.4%.

Scouting Charlotte
• Charlotte enters the game with an 8-15 record. The 49ers are 4-6 in Conference USA after falling 74-69 in overtime against Old Dominion last Saturday.
• Senior center Joseph Uchebo leads the team with 12.9 points and a league-best 11.4 rebounds. He is also fourth in field goal percentage (.587).
• Junior guard Braxton Ogbueze is scoring 12.7 points. He is leads the league in three-pointers per game (2.9), is third in three-point field goal percentage (.424) and 10th in minutes played (32.5).
• Freshman guard Jon Davis is averaging 11.3 points per game and 4.5 assists, good for fifth in C-USA.
• Freshman guard Andrien White is scoring 10.4 points while tying for third in the conference with 1.5 steals and freshman guard Curran Scott is adding 10.0 points while placing fifth in the league in free throw percentage (.829).
• Charlotte is averaging 75.9 points per game while allowing 80.2.
• The 49ers are connecting on 43.4% from the field and 37.0% from three, which is third in Conference USA, while allowing 48.6% from the floor and 42.2% from three.
• Mark Price is in his first season at the helm of the Charlotte basketball program, where he has an 8-15 (.348) record.

Next Up
• Rice closes its road trip this Saturday, Feb. 13, when it travels to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and will be televised by ASN.
