BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Rice University men’s basketball closes out its season-long four-game road trip and begins the second half of Conference USA action at Western Kentucky on Saturday at 7 p.m. It is the Owls’ first meeting with the Hilltoppers as C-USA foes. Fox College Sports Central will air the WKU broadcast of the game.
The teams have met just once before, as WKU claimed a 76-63 win at Rice in the 1980-81 season.
In its last outing, Rice started strong at Marshall, but a 15-2 run by the home team just after halftime broke open a close game. The Owls never quite recovered in a 69-55 setback on Thursday night.
Bishop Mency led the team in scoring for the first time on the season with 13 points, including four three-pointers. Andrew Drone added 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting with a team-high eight rebounds. Max Guercy also scored in double figures with 10 points to accompany four assists.
The Owls scored 26 points off of 16 Thundering Herd turnovers in the game.
Scouting the Hilltoppers
• WKU took over sole possession of first place in Conference USA with its comeback win over North Texas on Thursday night, 65-59. The ‘Toppers are 9-1 in league play.
• George Fant posted a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds in the game and averages 18.8 points and 11.0 rebounds in 10 C-USA contests.
• T.J. Price added 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists and leads the league with 17.7 points per game on the season.
• WKU paces Conference USA with 38.7 rebounds and 14.8 assists per game.
After Saturday’s game, Rice returns home to host Middle Tennessee on Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in Tudor Fieldhouse.
