HOUSTON, Texas — Marquez Letcher-Ellis was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week in a vote by the media, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
It is Letcher-Ellis’ first career honor. It is also the fifth honor for the Owls this year, as Marcus Evans has won the award four times.
Marquez Letcher-Ellis led Rice to a 1-1 record on the week. Letcher-Ellis averaged 24.0 points and 5.5 rebounds. He shot 66.7% (16-of-24) from the field, 33.3% (2-of-6) from three and 73.7% (14-of-19) from the charity stripe. Letcher-Ellis began the week by scoring a team-high 20 points in an 83-73 victory over WKU. It was his first career-20-point game. He also had five rebounds while going 5-of-6 from the floor and a career-best 10-of-14 from the free throw line. His performance helped Rice close the game on a 21-3 run.
The Houston native followed that up with a career performance against Marshall. He scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting, while grabbing six rebounds. He also set career-highs with 11 field goals, two free throws and six dunks.
UAB’s William Lee was named C-USA Player of the Week.
