Second Half Play Propels Men's Basketball over North Texas
Rice shot 64.0% from the field in the second half on its way to a 95-87 victory, Saturday night at Tudor Fieldhouse. The 95 points were a season-high.


HOUSTON — Rice looks to get back on track this Saturday, Jan. 14, when it hosts North Texas. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CT and will be live-streamed at CUSA.tv.

Scouting Rice
• Rice enters Saturday afternoon’s game with an 11-6 record, 1-3 in Conference USA. The Owls have lost two straight and three of four after an 88-81 overtime defeat to UAB last Saturday.
• Redshirt junior guard/forward Egor Koulechov is averaging 19.6 points, good for second-place in C-USA. He leads the nation (as of Jan. 11) in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 54.4% from beyond the arc. The Volgograd, Russia native is also third in the league in three-point field goals made (2.5), fifth in free throw percentage (.853), seventh in rebounding (8.0) and field goal percentage (.531) and eighth in minutes played (33.5).
• Sophomore guard Marcus Evans is fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game. He is also fourth in the league in assists (5.0) and ninth in three-point field goals made per game (2.2).
• Redshirt junior guard Marcus Jackson is averaging 12.8 points, 3.0 assists and 2.8 rebounds and sophomore guard Connor Cashaw is averaging 8.1 points and is second on the team with 5.2 rebounds.
• The Owls are second in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 82.8 points per game while allowing 74.8.
• Rice leads the league in field goal percentage (48.3%) and is third in three-point field goal percentage (38.9%) while allowing 43.6% from the floor and 34.1% from three.
• Rice is outrebounding its opponents by an average of 5.5 boards per game, 37.7-to-32.2.
• The Owls are also second in the league with 9.0 three-pointers made per game.
• Head coach Mike Rhoades is in his third season at the helm of the Rice basketball program. He owns a 35-46 (.432) record on South Main and a 232-122 (.655) record in 12 years as a head coach.

Scouting North Texas
• North Texas enters Saturday afternoon’s contest with a 6-10 record, 0-4 in Conference USA. The Mean Green has lost their last five games after falling to Middle Tennessee last Saturday, 79-68.
• Junior forward Jeremy Combs leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 10.9 points and 6.7 rebounds, respectively. He is also sixth in the league in field goal percentage, connecting on 57.0% from the floor.
• Senior guard Deckie Johnson is second on the team in scoring (9.6) and is fourth in the league in free throw percentage (85.4%).
• North Texas is scoring 66.5 points per game while allowing just 69.1.
• The Mean Green is connecting on just 41.2% from the field and 30.1% from three. They are allowing 41.4% from the floor and 34.1% from three.
• UNT is being outrebounded, 37.0-to-36.4.
• Head coach Tony Benford is in his fifth season at the helm of the North Texas men’s basketball program where he owns a 60-83 (.420) record.

Series History
• Rice and North Texas will meet for the 18th time.
• North Texas holds a 12-5 record in the series. In Houston, the series is tied at four.
• Last year, the teams split the series with North Texas winning in Denton (85-74) and Rice winning in Houston (95-87).
• Since North Texas joined Conference USA in 2013, Rice is 3-4 in the series.
• Head coach Mike Rhoades is 2-3 against the Mean Green.

Next Up
• Rice begins a two-game road trip next Thursday, Jan. 19, when it travels to Ruston, La., to face Louisiana Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT and will be live-streamed at CUSA.tv.
