Owls Drop 82-70 Decision at UAB
Rice once again made a second half rally, but in the end, it wasn't enough as the Owls fell, 82-70, Thursday night at league-leader UAB.


HOUSTON — Rice looks to get back on track this Saturday, Jan. 7, when it hosts UAB. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT and will be live-streamed at CUSA.tv.

Scouting Rice
• Rice enters Saturday night’s game with an 11-5 record, 1-2 in Conference USA. The Owls are coming off an 80-77 loss to Middle Tennessee on Thursday.
• Redshirt junior guard/forward Egor Koulechov is averaging 19.0 points, good for fourth-place in C-USA. He leads the country (as of Jan. 5) in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 58.0% from beyond the arc. The Volgograd, Russia native is also fourth in the league in three-point field goals made (2.5), sixth in rebounding (8.0) and free throw percentage (.836) and seventh in field goal percentage (.542).
• Sophomore guard Marcus Evans is fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per game. He is also fourth in the league in assists (4.9) and seventh in three-point field goals made per game (2.2).
• Redshirt junior guard Marcus Jackson is averaging 13.4 points, 3.1 assists and 2.8 rebounds. He is sixth in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9).
• Sophomore guard Connor Cashaw is averaging 8.4 points and is second on the team with 5.3 rebounds.
• The Owls are second in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 82.9 points per game while allowing 73.9.
• Rice leads the league in both field goal percentage (48.5%) and three-point field goal percentage (39.6%) while allowing 43.9% from the floor and 34.3% from three.
• Rice is outrebounding its opponents by an average of 5.8 boards per game, 37.8-to-32.0.
• The Owls are also second in the league with 9.1 three-pointers made per game.
• Head coach Mike Rhoades is in his third season at the helm of the Rice basketball program. He owns a 35-45 (.438) record on South Main and a 232-121 (.657) record in 12 years as a head coach.

Scouting UAB
• UAB enters Saturday night’s contest with an 8-7 record, 1-1 in Conference USA. The Blazers are coming off a 54-52 victory at North Texas on Thursday.
• Junior forward Chris Cokley leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.1 points per game and is second in rebounding with 5.4 boards per game. He also leads the league in field goal percentage, connecting on 60.8% from the floor.
• Junior forward William Lee is second on the team in scoring (11.4) and leads the squad in rebounding (6.1). He also leads the league in blocks (3.0).
• Senior guard Dirk Williams is averaging 10.7 points per game.
• Sophomore guard Deion Lavender is fifth in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.0) and sixth in assists (4.5).
• UAB is scoring 70.7 points per game while allowing just 69.1.
• The Blazers are connecting on 45.5% from the field and 32.7% from three. They are allowing 41.9% from the floor and 35.8% from three.
• UAB leads the league in free throw percentage and (.764) and blocks (5.6).
• Head coach Robbie Ehsan is in his first season at the helm of the UAB men’s basketball program where he owns an 8-7 (.533) record.

Series History
• Rice and UAB will meet for the 13th time.
• UAB holds an 11-1 record in the series. In Houston, the Blazers lead 5-1.
• UAB won the first 10 games of the series but the teams have split the last two.
• Last year, the Owls fell 82-70 in Birmingham.
• Head coach Mike Rhoades is 1-1 against UAB.
