Connor Cashaw had a career-high 27 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Ako Adams had career-highs of 16 points and nine assists and A.J. Lapray added a career-high 18 points. Cashaw and Lapray each tied their career-high with four three-pointers.
Northwestern State (0-4) scored five of the first seven points. However, the Demons missed their next nine shots as Rice went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-5 lead eight minutes into the game. After two NSU free throws, the teams traded baskets. But, a three-pointer by Connor Cashaw sent Rice on a 7-0 run over the next 1:32 to lead 20-9.
NSU hit a three and Rice (1-2) followed with an A.J. Lapray layup. But, Northwestern State scored the next seven points to pull within 22-19 with 3:04 to play in the half. The teams went back-and-forth over the next 1:31 before Rice closed the half on a 10-3 run, capped off by an Adams three-pointer with three seconds left as the Owls shot 59.1% from the field in the half while holding NSU to just 20.8%.
The teams traded points for the first two minutes of the second half. The Demons pulled to within six points on back-to-back three pointers. However, a minute later, Cashaw and Lapray fueled a 20-2 Rice run as the Owls took a 65-43 lead.
Rice pushed the lead to as many as 24 as Northwestern State would get no closer than 16 points.
The Owls were 30-of-53 from the floor, including 11-of-22 (50.0%) from three. Northwestern State was held to 37.7% from the floor and 26.3% from three. Rice also outrebounded the Demons, 40-to-30.
Rice continues it road trip when it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the MGM Grand Main Event. The Owls begin play on Monday, Nov. 20, against UNLV. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. CT.
