Todd Smith was an assistant basketball coach at Rice for 18 seasons (1989-07). Below is the final bio written about Smith, penned prior to the 2006-07 season.
Todd Smith begins his 18th year with
the Owls and has the longest
consecutive term of any staff member
on the Rice men's coaching staff.
Smith was
elevated to
his current
position
seven years
ago after
serving as
the third
assistant for
the five
years prior
(1991-96). Previously, he had served as
the graduate assistant coach for two
years (1989-91).
Highlights from his tenure include
helping the program achieve more than
150 wins, the first 20-win season in
more than 40 years and the first postseason
win since 1953.
For the Owls, Smith is involved in
almost all aspects of the program. The
myriad of duties that fall under his
umbrella of responsibilities are travel,
equipment, scouting, recruiting, and the
planning of practice and workout
schedules. In 18 years of service at Rice,
Smith has had the opportunity to coach
each player position.
Rice standout Brent Scott, the
school's all-time leading scorer and
rebounder, was among his first pupils at
the post position. When he later
changed to working with the guards in
1998-99, Robert Johnson finished 13th
in the nation in scoring. He also had
immediate impact assisting with his first
recruiting class. His first class included
future all-WAC honoree Mike Wilks
and when that group came of age in
1998-99, Rice won 18 games and
finished third in the conference.
A former four-year basketball
letterman at Valparaiso University,
Smith played three years for his father
(Tom Smith) and his final season for
current coach Homer Drew. Smith
finished his collegiate playing career
ranked third on the Crusaders' all-time
assists list with 368. He is also sixth on
the schools' list for career steals. He
graduated from Valparaiso in 1989
earning a B.S. in physical education and
communications.
The 40-year-old Smith, who was born
in Valparaiso, Ind., played high school
basketball at Valparaiso High. He was
an all-conference prep performer,
leading the Vikings to the "Sweet 16" in
a state that is fanatic about its high
school basketball. After graduating from
high school in 1984, he went on to play
at the next level for his father in his
hometown.
He and his wife, Ketti (Rice, '88),
have three sons, Turner (13), Tate (10),
and Jace (7), and a daughter, Sadie (5).
They reside in Pearland.
