Seniors to Close Home Careers on Saturday

Rice will honor its seniors before facing Charlotte at 7 p.m.

Dean Miller, M.S., A.T.C, enters his fifth year as a member of the Rice University athletic training staff. Among his responsibilities is coordinating the sports medicine needs of the men's basketball program.

Miller joined the Rice University staff from Diablo Valley College where he served as an assistant basketball coach and was responsible for strength and conditioning as well as nutrition for the team. Since the late 1970s, Miller has also been involved in athletic training for a variety of motorsports teams and drivers. He has been a part of 18 motorsports world championships.

During Miller's tenure at Diablo Valley College (1997-2009), the Vikings won eight conference championships and had 16 student-athletes go on to play for NCAA Division I programs.

Miller first became involved in motorsports in 1978 when he served as athletic trainer and sports medicine consultant for Kenny Roberts, the first American to win the 500cc Road Racing World Championship (1978, 1979 & 1980). He served in the same capacity for Kenny Roberts, Jr., and Team Suzuki's World Grand Prix racing team from 1999-2007. The junior Roberts won the 500cc World Championship in 2000.

Miller's involvement in athletic training and sports medicine has also included serving as a consultant to teams and drivers involved in Grand Prix and AMA superbike motorcycle racing as well as Indy Car racing.

Prior to joining the staff at Diablo Valley College, Miller was on staff at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif. (1977-87 and 1989-97). During his tenure at De La Salle, he was the head athletic trainer, a part-time instructor and also served as an assistant basketball coach.

Miller is a 1976 graduate of California State University, Sacramento and received his M.S. in Physical Education Athletic Training from the University of Arizona in 1977. He has been a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association since 1977.

Miller also serves as Member Emeritus of the Board of Directors for Riders for Health Charity in Northampton, England, and is a member of the Sports Advisory Board for Advocare Nutrition.
