Gus Argenal served as an assistant coach at Rice for the 2012-13 season before accepting the head coaching position at Cal State East Bay in May 2013. Argenal, who spent the 2011-12 season as a member of the staff at UC Davis, was named to the Rice coaching staff in June 2012.
His impact in recruiting and with mentoring guards quickly became evident. In the course of the 2012-13 campaign, Argenal worked to bring in a top recruiting class that includes signees from his former stomping grounds in Arizona and California. Additionally, freshman point guard Max Guercy stepped up to lead the team and finish among the league's top rookies in assists. Under Argenal's guidance, the guard earned five Conference USA Freshman of the Week awards and was named to the league's all-freshman team.
At UC Davis in 2011-12, Argenal coached Tyrell Corbin into the Big West Conference's top 10 in assists and steals. The team ranked third in the league in three-point percentage and advanced to the league's quarterfinals.
Argenal began his coaching career as a graduate assistant on the staff at Arizona State for the 2004-05 season. The Sun Devils boasted an 11-1 non-conference record and earned a berth in the 2005 NIT.
He returned to UC Davis to serve as an assistant coach on the Aggies' staff for the 2005-06 season before his first stint in Texas.
He worked as the team operations coordinator at UTSA for two seasons (2006-08). At UTSA, he was responsible for film exchange, assisting with recruiting coordination and on-campus visits, strength and conditioning, academics and compliance. He also mentored Southland Conference all-freshman honoree Devin Gibson.
He returned to Northern California in 2008 to join the Chico State staff. In addition to a continued focus on strength and conditioning, his primary duties included recruiting as well as perimeter player development. At Chico State, he coached four all-conference selections and helped the Wildcats to two CCAA Tournament appearances.
Argenal was one of UC Davis' all-time best point guards and still shares the school's game record for assists (13). His 274 assists rank seventh in program history. He led the team in assists in two seasons and steals as a senior. He graduated from UC Davis in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in history and earned a master's degree in education from Arizona State in 2005.
Argenal's wife, the former Hannah Turner, played for the UC Davis women's team. The couple has two sons, Bo (3) and Ace, who turns two in August.
