TUCSON, Ariz. - Junior pitcher Glenn Otto has been named a preseason All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball, the publication announced on Monday (Dec. 19).
Otto is one of just two relief pitchers named a First Team Preseason All-America by Collegiate Baseball. The right-hander posted sensational season with the Owls in 2016, earning First Team All-Conference USA honors after posting eight saves and 9-2 record in 33 appearances out of the bullpen. As a sophomore he maintained a 2.26 ERA in 71.2 innings and held opposing hitters to a composite .209 batting average. The Spring, Texas, native averaged 9.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings with a 2.5-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio. At one point in the season Otto was named to the watch list for the national Stopper of the Year Award.
Otto is one of eleven veteran Owl pitchers, along with seven offensive starters in the batting order, returning in 2017. Under direction of head coach Wayne Graham Rice went 38-24 a year ago and made the NCAA Tournament for the 22nd consecutive season. The Blue & Gray have won or shared a conference regular season or tournament title in 20 of the last 21 seasons. Rice opens the 2017 regular season on the road against longtime rival Texas with a four-game weekend series in Austin, on Feb. 17-19.
