Rice head baseball coach Wayne Graham was very pleased with the Owls' effort at Tuesday's exhibition across town at the University of Houston's Cougar field.
"I thought we played well," coach Graham said, now in his 21st season at the helm of the Rice program. "We had a couple of mistakes here and there, but our defense was sound and our pitchers threw well. We squared-up on quite a few pitches. It was pretty satisfying overall because the pitching stayed solid the whole 14 innings. I thought Craig Manuel did an incredible job of catching."
Manuel was one of the Rice veterans who paced the squad in what was the first of two fall exhibitions. The second is slated for this Sunday (Oct. 16) at 1 pm at Reckling Park.
Senior right-handed pitcher Matthew Reckling pitched 3.0 scoreless frames, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out four. Senior left-hander Taylor Wall worked 3.0 innings, scattering three hits while striking out one.
The Owls had home runs by sophomore outfielder Michael Aquino and junior right fielder Michael Ratterree.
