HOUSTON - Now entering his 27th season at the helm of the Rice baseball program, Owl head coach Wayne Graham welcomed back 25 returning lettermen from last year's team that earned a 23rd-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament to begin the squad's fall training on Monday (Oct. 2).
The Owls return three offensive starters in the batting order and more than a dozen veteran pitchers who helped the 2017 team win the Conference USA tournament title. Nine of the 11 newcomers on the team are freshmen from the high school ranks and two new players are joining Rice as transfers. After a brief period of conditioning and drills, Graham divided the team for a Blue-Gray scrimmage.
Under the direction of coach Graham Rice baseball has won or shared a total of 21 conference championships (including either regular season and/or conference tournament titles). The Owls closed-out the 2017 season with a sensational four-game run at the C-USA Championship, capped by a walk-off win in the title game over No. 11 ranked Southern Miss. The Blue & Gray then battled No. 2 ranked LSU on the road in the NCAA Tournament.
