Rice's Michael Aquino is back to defend his title as the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby champion this week in Omaha, Neb., before a nationally-televised audience on ESPN.
The fifth annual College Home Run Derby is scheduled for 7:30 pm on Thursday (July 3) at Ameritrade Park Omaha. Aquino won the 2013 event by blasting a total of 20 home runs, including six in the final round.
In 2014 The Woodlands, Texas, native earned First Team All-Conference USA honors by hitting .316 with seven home runs and 46 RBI. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the C-USA Tournament by helping the Owls win title and advancing to an NCAA Regional for the 20th consecutive year.
To defend his 2013 crown Aquino will have to hold off some of the top collegiate sluggers in the country. The 2014 event field of entrants consists of Tres Barrera (Texas), Matt Dacey (Richmond), Bobby Dalbec (Arizona), Eric Gutierrez (Texas Tech), Hunter Haley (Oklahoma), Sikes Orvis (Mississippi) and Zach Ratcliff (Ohio State).
