HOUSTON - The Rice tandem of Shane Hoelscher and Skyler Ewing have been named to the 2014 Houston All-Regional Team, it was announced at the conclusion of the event Monday night (June 2).
The Owl duo had an outstanding weekend of games in the NCAA postseason. Ewing went a combined 5-for-12 (.417) at the plate with a home run, two doubles, an RBI and five runs scored in Rice's three games. His dramatic ninth-inning home run against Texas A&M Sunday tied the game and help send it into extra innings.
In addition to steady defense at the hot corner, Hoelscher had the most hits of any third baseman at the Regional and finished the weekend batting 4-for-13 (.308) with three runs scored and a pair of RBI. It's the second-consecutive year for the senior to be selected to an all-NCAA Regional team after earning the same honor in Eugene, Oregon, in 2013.
On Monday night Texas defeated Texas A&M 4-1 to win the Regional and advance to the NCAA's Super Regional round. Rice went 1-2 over the weekend and finished with a final record of 42-20.
