IRVING, Tex. - Rice's Shane Hoelscher has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week for April 7-13, the league office announced Monday (April 14) from its headquarters in Irving, Texas.
After helping to lead Rice to a 4-0 week including a win at No. 7 Texas and a conference sweep at Tulane, the Owls' senior third baseman was named the C-USA USA Hitter of the Week for the first time in his career. The league's Pitcher of the Week award went to Florida Atlantic senior right-hander Jeremy Strawn, who fired a complete-game, three-hit shutout on Saturday.
Hoelscher went 10-for-17 (.588) at the plate last week with three different three-hit games. The Belton, Texas, native also scored two runs in three of the outings, finishing the week by crossing the plate six times. He knocked a double in the win over nationally-ranked Texas and drove in a run in the C-USA finale at Tulane. Hoelscher also drew a pair of walks to give him a .632 on-base average.
Three Owls have been named the C-USA Hitter of the Week this season, including Hoelscher, John Clay Reeves (March 17) and Skyler Ewing (Feb. 17). Zech Lemond was named the league's Pitcher of the Week on March 24.
The Rice baseball team next plays a road game at Lamar University on Tuesday night (April 15) before returning back to Reckling Park for a three-game C-USA weekend series vs. UAB on April 18-20. The start time for the Lamar game is set for 6:30 pm in Beaumont.
