DALLAS -- Rice sophomore Aaron Luna was named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week for Feb. 26 the league office announced from its headquarters in Dallas on Monday. Southern Miss senior righthander Ryan Belanger joined Luna as the league's Pitcher of the Week honoree.
Luna batted .467 (7-for-15) last week with four RBI and six runs scored to help the Owls go 4-0. Not only did he hit safely in each game, he hit a double in all four games. The former Southlake, Tex., star added a home run to go with the four doubles for a .933 slugging percentage. He also drew two walks to maintain a .529 on-base percentage. As the starting second baseman he was perfect in the field on 14 chances and he started or turned three of the team's five double plays.
It is the second time in his Rice career that Luna has been named the C-USA Hitter of the Week. He also earned the honor as a freshman last season for the week of Feb. 12. Earlier this year, the Owls' Ryan Berry was named the league's Pitcher of the Week.
After wrapping up an eight-game homestand Sunday with its sixth win in a row, Rice (9-4) next plays four-consecutive games on the road. The Owls travel to Huntsville, Tex., on Tuesday (Feb. 27) for a 6:30 pm game against Sam Houston State. The team then plays a three-game weekend series at national power Cal State Fullerton March 2-4. The Owls better get use to a taxing road life over the next few weeks. Rice is scheduled for only nine home games (and 17 away games) between Feb. 27 and tax day on April 15.
