HOUSTON - Rice junior right-hander Austin Kubitza has been named a Conference USA co-pitcher of the week, the league office announced Monday morning from its headquarters in Irving, Tex. Kubitza shared the C-USA pitching honor with Tulane's Tony Rizzotti. The hitter of the week award went Houston's Josh Vidales.
Kubitza had a sensational 2013 debut Friday at home in the season-opener against No. 4 ranked Stanford (Feb. 15). He posted one of the highest individual strikeout totals in the country with a career-high 12 in just 6.0 innings of work against the Cardinal. The Colleyville, Tex., native did not allow any runs in the outing, scattering just four singles to hold 22 Stanford hitters to a composite .182 batting average. Before the start of the season Kubitza was tabbed by the C-USA coaches as the league's preseason pitcher of the year.
Tony Rizzotti threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout on opening day against Sam Houston State. The Green Wave's sophomore right-hander struck out five and walked one. Cougar freshman John Vidales went 6-for-12 in the opening weekend with three runs scored, two RBI, a double and a stolen base against Northeastern.
The Rice baseball team is now 2-1 on the season. The Owls close-out their season-opening homestand on Tuesday (Feb. 19) against longtime state-foe Dallas Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 pm at Reckling Park.
