HOUSTON - The Rice baseball team, ranked as high as No. 20 in the country in one national preseason poll, held its first practice of 2016 at Reckling Park on Friday (Jan. 29). Rice head coach Wayne Graham welcomed back 16 returning lettermen from last season's squad that went 37-22, won the Conference USA regular season title, and advanced to an NCAA Regional for the 21st straight year.

On the first day of practice Coach Graham, who is now in his 25th season at the helm of the baseball program, went right to work. The team has a short time to prepare for the home opener and there are some starting positions that have the head coach's full attention. Graham's 2016 squad returns five of the nine starters in the batting order and a host of veteran pitchers from a year ago. The Owls have a highly-touted group of incoming freshmen players making their Division I debut this spring.

Rice's talented team is no secret in college baseball circles. The Owls are ranked 20th in the country by Collegiate Baseball Magazine and in the Top 25 of four other polls. The squad opens the upcoming season at home against Pac-12 power Arizona with a three-game weekend series at Reckling Park on Feb. 19-20. Season tickets for a challenging slate of 31 regular season games are available in all stadium sections and start as low as $125. The talented lineup of teams also visiting Rice in 2016 are Houston, Texas A&M, TCU, Charlotte, Dallas Baptist, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Lamar, Old Dominion, Sam Houston State, Texas State, UAB, UCF and Western Kentucky.
