BATON ROUGE, La. – The Rice baseball team amassed 16 hits and had a sensational pitching performance from starter Ricardo Salinas on the way to a 15-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana Monday afternoon in the NCAA Regional.
The Owls survived the first test, and now advance to meet national power LSU in an elimination game for Rice on Monday at 7:45 pm. The game is set for a live broadcast on ESPNU.
Rice opened the scoring in the day’s first game in the top of the second inning. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Ryan Chandler. The sophomore made his first base hit of the Regional a big one, doubling to left field to drive in two. Hunter Kopycinski followed with a single up the middle to plate two more for a 4-0 advantage.
The Blue & Gray then sent eight men to the plate for three more runs in the top of the fourth, followed by another 11-batters taking swings as part of a six-run fifth to make the score 13-0. Salinas did not need the bountiful support. The sophomore right-hander worked a total of 7.1 innings, scattering three hits and one walk with four strikeouts, all without allowing a single run to a 40-win SELA Lion team. He was relieved by sophomore Willy Amador, who worked the final 1.2 shutout frames after a 97-minute rain delay.
Rice is now 37-23 on the season. Southeastern Louisiana finished its 2016 season at 40-21.
