Biloxi, Miss. – FAU scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 4-4 deadlock and claim an eventual 7-4 win over the Rice baseball team in a morning-round game at the C-USA Championship Saturday at MGM Park in Biloxi.
Down but not out, Rice is still alive in the annual postseason tournament where an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA Tournament is on the line. The same two teams will return later Saturday evening to play an elimination game where the winner advances to Sunday's Championship Final and the loser’s season comes to an end.
Playing as the home team in the tournament's neutral setting Rice took an early 1-0 advantage with a run in the second inning. FAU stormed back with four runs in the top of the third, three where the batters reached base on walks.
Rice continued to fight, and tied the contest in the sixth. The Blue & Gray followed a FAU fielding errors with consecutive singles to load the bases. Ford Proctor then delivered a big double off the right field wall to clear the stations for a new 4-4 game.
FAU immediately answered with two runs in the seventh, and later added an insurance run in the ninth for a 7-4 final.
The late Rice-FAU rematch will be 40 minutes after the conclusion of a 5 pm game between Southern Miss and Charlotte.
