HOUSTON – Visiting Middle Tennessee posted 13 runs on 16 hits to defeat the Rice baseball team 13-1 Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park in Houston.
Rice is now 23-28 overall and 13-13 in the league. The Owls still hold sole possession of seventh place in the conference standings as other C-USA games became complete Saturday.
Middle Tennessee improved to 22-28 on the season and 8-18 in conference. The Blue Raiders drew three walks and had one hit to help push across a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. MT scored in six of the nine innings. Six Owl pitchers saw action on the day for Rice.
Rice scored its lone run in the eighth as Dominic DiCaprio drew a two-out walk. Owl freshman Brad Gneiting was brought in to pinch run for the veteran catcher, and proceeded to score from first on Darryn Sheppard’s double to left. Sheppard extended his hitting streak to a team-best 16-straight games.
The C-USA weekend series, now level at 1-1, concludes Sunday. First pitch of the series finale is set for 12 noon (which is a change from some earlier listings). Three Rice seniors will be honored in a special pregame ceremony.
