HOUSTON -- The visiting University of Houston baseball team scored early runs to pull away for a 10-0 victory at Rice's Reckling Park Tuesday evening.
The regular season series for the annual Silver Glove Trophy is now tied at one game apiece. The crosstown foes are scheduled to play the deciding contest in one week (May 17) at Constellation Field in Sugar Land.
Houston scored a run in the top of the second for a 1-0 lead, but pushed across three more in both the third and fourth innings to stretch the margin to 7-0. The Cougars added another in the fifth and two more in the seventh for a 10-0 final. UH second baseman Josh Vidales went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBI to lead a 12-hit attack.
Houston improved to 28-19 on the season. Rice is now 31-15 as its five-game win streak came to an end.
Owl true freshman Ford Proctor went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk to extend his hitting streak to nine-straight games. Rice finished the night six hits. Credit UH starting pitcher Trey Cumbie, who pitched 8.0 shutout innings with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Blue & Gray next has three key Conference USA league games to close out the regular season home slate on May 13-15. The Rice Owls host the Florida Atlantic Owls at Reckling Park. Friday's game time is set for 7 pm and is scheduled for a national television broadcast on FoxSports2.
