HOUSTON -- The Rice trio of Brian Friday, Joe Savery and Aaron Luna all collected three hits, and the Owls combined a big five-run third inning and a stellar relief outing by Matt Langwell to claim a 6-4 win over visiting Texas State Wednesday evening at Reckling Park in Houston. The victory was the Owls' 11th in a row and the 19th win in the last 20 games.
Texas State looked to be in control with a pair of runs in the early going. In the top of the second Paul Goldschmidt singled to left with one away and advanced to second on an error. Elliot Babcock drove him in with a two-out single for a 1-0 lead. In the second the Bobcats took advantage of another Rice fielding error to double the margin to 2-0.
The Owls bounced back in the bottom of the frame by batting around for five runs on four hits. Danny Lehmann led off with a walk and Friday singled to right. Jared Gayhart laced a ball up the middle for the first run. Savery singled with one out to load the bases and Jess Buenger drew a walk to tie the game, 2-2. Luna's base hit up the middle scored both Savery and Gayhart as Buenger hustled to third. Diego Seastrunk's fielder's choice drove in a run for the final score and the Blue & Gray surged ahead 5-2.
The Bobcats got a run back in the top of the fourth. Jared Bunn walked and advanced station-by-station on consecutive ground outs. He scored on a single to center by Pat Crumpton to cut the lead back down to two, 5-3.
Rice added a final insurance run in the sixth after a Texas State pitching change. Friday led off by blasting his third hit of the day with a double to the wall in left field. He scored on the third hit of the day by Savery that made the score 6-3.
Like he did in a brief three-inning start against Texas State back in the second game of the season, sophomore pitcher Matt Langwell
once again handcuffed the Bobcats with a sterling effort on the mound. The College Station, Tex., native entered the game from the bullpen in the fifth and worked out of a two-on, nobody out, jam by thwarting a sacrifice attempt and firing the first two of his three strikeouts on the night. Langwell continued to hold State in check all the way to the final out to earn his fifth win of the season.
Langwell allowed just two hits with no walks while fanning three. The lone Bobcat run off Langwell was in the seventh after a leadoff double by Thomas Field and pair of ground outs that accounted for the 6-4 final score. It's the second-straight solid outing for Langwell after a career-best 7.0 innings for a Conference USA road win at UAB on April 27.
Rice improved to 38-11 on the season. Texas State fell to 32-18 overall.
The Owls' eight-game homestand continues with a three-game Conference USA weekend series May 11-13 at Reckling Park. Rice hosts Tulane in the second-to-last league series of the season. Start times with the Green Wave are set for 7 pm Friday, 2 pm Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
