HOUSTON – The visiting UTSA baseball team broke a 5-5 tie with five ninth inning runs on the way to a 10-6 win over the Rice Owls in the opening game of a three-game C-USA weekend league series Friday night at Reckling Park.
Rice is now 16-26 on the season and in a three-way tie for ninth place in the C-USA standings with a 7-12 league record. UTSA improved to 22-18 overall and 10-9 in conference.
The Roadrunners jumped on the scoreboard for three runs in the top of the first inning on three hits. The big blow was Trent Bowles’ fifth home run of the season that drove in two.
Rice battled back to take the lead in the bottom of the second. Three hits, a pair of walks and hit batter helped lead to a four-run frame as Rice batted-around to move in front, 4-3.
The Owls had a chance to widen the margin with runners in scoring position in both the fourth and the fifth, but UTSA worked out of both situations without any damage. The Roadrunners then moved in front, 5-4, with a pair of runs on three hits in the seventh. The Blue & Gray answered with a game-tying run in the bottom of the frame, capitalizing on a UTSA fielding error with the bases-loaded.
The Roadrunners then broke the tie sending nine men to the plate for five runs in the ninth. Rice worked to get one final score back in the in its half of the ninth. Dane Myers beat out an infield base hit and eventually scored on Tristan Gray’s ninth double of the season. The Owls finished the night with nine hits and ended up leaving a total of ten on the bases.
