The Rice baseball team had a solid start from freshman pitcher Jon Duplantier to help the Owls defeat visiting UAB 5-3, and complete a sweep of the three-game C-USA weekend series Sunday afternoon at Reckling Park.
With the win Rice improved to 29-13 overall and remained atop the C-USA standings with a 16-5 league record. UAB dropped to 24-16 on the year and 10-8 in conference.
The Owls quickly supported Duplantier with a 4-0 lead by scoring one run in the bottom of the first, two more in the third and one in the sixth. The freshman right-hander in his third career start kept UAB off the board for the first seveb frames and posted a career-high seven strikeouts.
The Blazers, howver, rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth before Trevor Teykl from the Owl bullpen could halt the threat. Rice then answered with an insurance run on the bottom of the eighth for an eventual 5-3 final.
The Owl senior tandem of Keenan Cook and Michael Aquino combined for five of the team's 11 hits. Rice next hosts longtime foe Texas A&M on Tuesday, April 22, to close out the current homestand. Start time is set for 6:30 pm at Reckling Park.
