HOUSTON -- The sixth-ranked Rice baseball team used two five-run innings and a solid outings from pitchers Ryan Berry and Matt Langwell to coast to a 10-1 victory over visiting UCF in the opening game of a three-game Conference USA weekend series Friday evening at Reckling Park in Houston.
The Owls posted a five-run third and added another five in the seventh for the offense's third double-digit run total in the last four games. Junior Jordan Dodson led off the third with a walk and doubles by Brian Friday and Tyler Henley scored the first two. Joe Savery and Jess Buenger collected back-to-back singles to score one and a walk to Aaron Luna loaded the bases. Freshman Diego Seastrunk punched a base hit through the left side to score Savery and Buenger and the Owls had quickly batted around with a 5-0 lead.
The Golden Knights chipped away for a run in the top of the seventh on a pair of singles and an RBI ground out. That was all Berry allowed for on the night for his sixth win of the season. The freshman right-hander from Humble, Tex., scattered six hits and walk while firing four strikeouts. Berry worked out of a bases-load jam in the fourth and used double plays to erase runners in the second and third.
After UCF's score in the seventh, the Owls answered by batting around for five more run in the bottom of the frame on just three hits. The Blue & Gray patiently drew four walks and RBI singles by Jared Gayhart and Luna stretched the lead to 10-1. Rice reliever Matt Langwell worked the final two frames. He held UCF scoreless on three hits and struck out two.
Rice's record is now 31-11 overall and 11-2 in C-USA action. UCF fell to 18-21 on the season and 1-9 against the league. The series continues at Rice with a 2 pm game on Saturday and a 1 pm Sunday. (All start times listed are Central time.)
