BEAUMONT, Tex. - The Rice baseball team could not contain the Lamar offense as the Cardinals claimed a 10-1 win over the visiting Owls Tuesday evening in Beaumont, Texas.
Rice is now 26-13 on the season after its four-game win streak as come to an end. Lamar improved to 22-15 overall with the team's fourth-straight win.
Lamar pushed across runs in three-straight innings for an early 8-0 lead. The Cardinals scored two in the bottom of the third and another three in both the fourth and fifth. It was the bottom of the Lamar order that reached base and scored the runs and top two hitters in the lineup, Jude Vidrine and Reed Seeley, who tallied six of the team's first eight RBI.
The Owls got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Senior Keenan Cook led off with a single and Shane Hoelscher and Skyler Ewing followed with consecutive walks. Cook hustled home on an RBI grounder by John Williamson to make it 8-1. The Cards however were quickly back on the offensive in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice more on three hits to stretch the margin to 10-1.
Lamar finished with 15 hits, the most allowed by the Rice pitching staff this season. Cook registered a pair of hits for the Blue & Gray, his 14th multi-hit game of the season.
The Owls have concluded the week-long five-game road swing. Rice next returns home for a three-game Conference USA series against UAB beginning on April 18. Friday start time is scheduled for 6:30 pm at Reckling Park.
