HOUSTON – Visiting Louisiana Tech collected 16 hits and senior Nate Harris pitched a complete game shutout to pace the Bulldogs to a 6-0 Conference USA win over the Rice baseball team Sunday afternoon at Reckling Park.
Rice is now 11-23 on the season and 3-9 in C-USA league play. LA Tech claimed the three-game weekend series two games to one while improving to 21-12 overall and 4-8 in conference.
The Bulldogs pushed across a run on two hits in both of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 advantage. That proved to be enough room as Harris posted his second C-USA complete game shutout in as many starts. The right-hander from San Antonio allowed just three Rice singles as well as two walks to improve to 4-0 on the season while lowering his ERA to 0.60.
Rice’s best offensive chance was in the bottom of the first inning. Trailing 1-0, the Owls drew a leadoff walk and had a single to center put runners on first and third. Harris used two strikeouts to help work out of trouble. He went on to record a complete game shutout. Though still a tight 2-0 game after five innings, his offense backed him up with four more insurance runs over the last four frames.
The Owls used a total of six pitchers in the contest. Junior Dane Myers registered 5.0 innings of work allowing just one run. He finished the day scattering six singles with two walks and two strikeouts.
Rice’s current seven-game home stand continues thru next week. The Owls host crosstown rival Houston on Tuesday, April 11, in the second game of the season-long three-game series for the annual Silver Glove Trophy. First pitch against the Cougars is set for 6:30 pm at Reckling Park. The Blue & Gray then return to C-USA action with a three-game weekend series against beginning Southern Miss on April 14.
