HOUSTON -- The UAB baseball team scored six runs on eight hits and a pair of Rice fielding errors to claim a 6-2 win over the Owls in the second game of the Conference USA weekend series Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park.
Rice, which had battled back for a pair of runs midway through the contest to cut the UAB lead to 3-2, saw its six-game home winning streak come to an end. The Owls are 19-11 overall and 8-3 in Conference USA action. UAB improved to 12-19 on the year and 4-7 against the league.
The Blue & Gray was down 3-0 before staging a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Dane Myers hustled to beat-out a force play at second, which loaded the bases for senior Connor Teykl. Teykl followed with a single to right field and Rice was back in the game at 3-2.
UAB came right back with two run in the top of the seventh on a pair of hits and Owl fielding error. The Blazers added one final insurance run in the top of the ninth to make it 6-2. Rice tried one final rally of its own in the bottom of the ninth with getting two runners on base before UAB worked out of trouble.
Owl senior Blake Fox matched his season-high striking out seven in 7.0 innings of work to go along with just one walk. Freshman Dominic DiCaprio finished with two of the squad's seven hits but Rice could have used more timely hits, going a combined 3-for-15 when runners were on base.
The C-USA series concludes Sunday (April 10). First pitch vs. the Blazers is set for 1 pm at Reckling Park.
