HOUSTON – Visiting Louisiana Tech used a seventh inning three-run home run to break a 3-3 deadlock and claim a 6-4 win over the Rice baseball team in the opener of a three-game Conference USA weekend series Friday evening at Reckling Park.

Rice opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning after Ford Proctor laced a leadoff double down the line in right field. He took third on a grounder to the right side and scored on a RBI single by Charlie Warren. LA Tech tied the game in the fourth on a two-out double by Sean Ullrich to score Raphael Gladu, but the Owls responded in the bottom of the frame with another leadoff double by Proctor and two-out RBI single by Warren.

The Bulldogs took their first lead of the night in the fifth. Chace Lunceford’s two-out triple drove in two to take a 3-2 advantage, but the Owls were back on the board to level the score in the sixth. Dane Myers belted a leadoff triple to right-center and scored easily on Dominic DiCaprio’s sacrifice fly. LA Tech came right back with three in the seventh. With two on and two away, Marshall Boggs’ sixth home run of the season put the Bulldogs up by three, 6-3. Rice fought back for a run in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single to make it 6-4. La Tech avoided further trouble in the seventh and worked around the Owls putting men on base in both the eighth ninth.

Three Owls led the way with nine of the team’s ten hits, including Warren going 4-for-4, Myers 3-for-3 and Proctor with a pair of doubles. Rice is now 10-22 on the season and 2-8 in C-USA.
