BOCA RATON, Fla. -- FAU scored five unanswered runs to pull away for an 8-2 Conference USA win over the visiting Rice baseball team Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla.
FAU won the weekend league series two games to one and improved to 18-8-1 on the season and 7-2 in C-USA. Rice is now 9-21 overall and 2-7 in C-USA league play. FAU
FAU took advantage of a Rice miscue to open the game's scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Rice could have been out of the inning after just three batters, but an error and base hit put runners on first and second. Designated hitter Jared Shouppe followed with a three-run homer over the wall in right field for a 3-0 advantage.
Rice came right back with two in the top of the fourth. Leadoff batter Ryan Chandler was hit by a pitch and two batters later Dominic DiCaprio blasted a pitch over the wall in left. His team-leading fourth homer of the season cut the lead to 3-2.
One one-run difference did not last long as FAU added another score in the fourth. Stephen Kerr knocked a one-out double down the left field line. Austin Langham then dropped a single into shallow right-center to make it 4-2.
Rice could have helped itself loading the bases in the top of the sixth but FAU worked out of the jam. The defending C-USA regular season champions then batted around on the way to three-run seventh, extending the home margin to 7-2. A final run was tallied in the eighth for an 8-2 final.
The three-game C-USA weekend series has concluded, but Rice's current road swing has not. The Blue & Gray still has one more road game in the current stretch, a Tuesday night clash at crosstown rival Houston on April 4. Start time in game one of the annual Silver Glove Trophy Series is set for 6:30 pm at UH's Schroeder Park.
