Rice had no shortage of offensive chances, collecting ten hits and also drawing six walks on four Bearkat pitchers. The Blue & Gray stranded a season-high 13 men in falling to 18-9. SHSU improved to 13-11 on the season.
The teams were deadlocked 0-0 for four frames before Sam Houston opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth. Kevin Miller singled through the left side with one away and advanced to third on a base hit to right by Shea Pierce. Miller scored on a bunt by Romeo Cortina for a 1-0 lead.
The Bearkats then stretched the margin to 5-0 by batting around for four more runs on five hits and an Owl fielding error in the sixth.
Rice cut into the lead late with two runs in the top of the eighth. Geoff Perrott walked and Michael Aquino singled for the third time. Both runners advanced with a ground ball to the right side before scoring on Skyler Ewing's career-best third hit of the night to make it 5-2.
Sam Houston came back with a four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Four hits and an Owl fielding error gave the Bearkats a new 9-2 advantage.
The Owls have wrapped-up the current four-game road stretch. Rice next plays Conference USA foe Tulane on Thursday (March 28) to begin a three-game league series at Reckling Park. Start time against the Green Wave is slated for 6:35 pm. The contest will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
