HOUSTON -- The nationally-ranked Rice and Texas A&M baseball teams combined for 19 runs and 26 hits in an 11-inning offensive slugfest before the Aggies claimed a 10-9 victory over the Owls Tuesday evening at Reckling Park.
With Texas A&M holding a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, Rice rallied for a pair of runs to tie the game. The Owls had a chance to win in the ninth when Brian Friday was hit by a pitch with two away. He moved into scoring position on an errant pickoff attempt but was stranded to force extra innings.
Rice worked out of a jam in the 10th, stranding an A&M runner in scoring position after a leadoff single. The Aggies rallied for a score that proved to be the winning score in the 11th. Ben Feltner singled through the left side and stole second base. He scored an unearned run on a Rice fielding error for a 10-9 advantage.
In the bottom of the 11th Rice put two men on when designated hitter Jess Buenger doubled with two outs and Chad Lembeck drew a walk. A&M held off the rally to claim the 10-9 final and move to 21 -3 on the year.
The Blue & Gray dropped to 17-8 overall. Four of the team's losses this season have been by a single run. The Owls combined to slug a total of 12 base hits on the night, including Tyler Henley and Joe Savery who both had three each. In the third inning sophomore Aaron Luna blasted his fifth home run of the season for the team's first grand slam of 2007.
Rice next opens Conference USA action with a three-game weekend series at Southern Miss March 23-25. The start times against the Golden Eagles (15-6) are set for 6:30 pm Friday, 3 pm Saturday and 1 pm Sunday in Hattiesburg, Miss.
