SAN MARCOS, Texas – A seven-run fourth inning propelled Texas State past the visiting Rice baseball team 13-4 Wednesday evening at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas.

Texas State was quick to score single runs in each of the first two innings. The Bobcats did not need a hit in the bottom of the first. The Owls walked the bases-loaded and Jaylen Hubbard’s one-out sacrifice fly put State up 1-0. In the second, Jared Huber reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on Derek Scheible’s two-out single to left.

Rice answered with single runs in the third and fourth. Newcomers Darryn Sheppard and Chace Sarchet hit back-to-back third inning doubles that made the score 2-1. Ford Proctor led off the fourth with a single, stole second base, went to third on Brad Gneiting’s infield hit and scored on Sheppard’s sacrifice fly to tie the score, 2-2.

The Bobcats exploded for seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth. The big hit was Theodore Hoffman belting a three-run homer to left. The Owls did not help themselves issuing three walks while having three runs score on three wild pitches.

State another run in the sixth and then three more in the eighth. The Blue & Gray fought for a run on a walk and two hits in the eighth, and a final run in the ninth of the 13-4 final. Eight different Owls combined for nine hits. The team ended up leaving a total of 11 runners on base.

Rice dropped its third-straight game to fall to 6-13 on the season. Texas State improved to 10-7 on the year.
