BEAUMONT, Texas -- The visiting Rice baseball team jumped out to an early lead, but Lamar rallied for nine unanswered runs on the way to a 10-4 win over the Owls Tuesday evening at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont, Texas.
Rice went right to work for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Charlie Warren led off with a single to left and Ryan Chandler followed with a triple to the wall in right field. Chandler scored on an RBI grounder to the right side for a 2-0 lead.
Lamar answered with a run on one hit in the bottom of the frame but Rice was quick to add two more in the top of the third. Chandler singled with two away and Ford Proctor laced a RBI triple off the wall in right-center. Dominic DiCaprio followed with a double to right for a 4-1 advantage.
The Cardinals got one run back in the fifth, took the lead with a four-run sixth and added four more in the eighth. The big hit was Mike Leal's pinch-hit grand slam in the sixth for a 6-4 Lamar lead.
The Warren and Chandler duo finished the night with three hits each, two-thirds of the Owls' nine hit attack. Rice is now 4-9 overall. Lamar improved to 8-5 on the season.
