SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Rice outhit Texas State in the game 8-7, but the Bobcats claimed a 6-2 win over the visiting Owls' baseball team Tuesday night in San Marcos, Texas.
Texas State jumped on the scoreboard early for a pair of runs, and did so without getting any hits. In the bottom of the first, a hit batsman and an error on a pickoff attempt led to an unearned run. Three walks in the second led to another run and a 2-0 score.
Rice borrowed the theme for a run in the third. Dominic Cox drew a leadoff walk and dashed around the bases to third on an errant Texas State pickoff attempt. He scored on a RBI grounder by Ryan Chandler that cut the lead to one, 2-1.
The Bobcats quickly got the run back in the bottom of the frame. State then collected five hits to add three more runs on the board in the fifth that stretched the margin to 6-1.
Rice was efficient getting the leadoff batter on base in seven of the nine innings. It helped the Blue & Gray fight for a final run in the ninth when Ford Proctor singled home Chandler.
The Owls pitchers issued eight free passes from five walks and three hit batters, and also recorded three wild pitches on the night. Rice is now 5-7 on the season. Texas State improved to 7-4 overall.
Rice is back on the road one more time March 7 before opening a six-game homestand on Friday. The Owls next face longtime state foe Lamar on Wednesday night. Start time against the Cardinals is set for 6 pm in Beaumont. Rice returns to Reckling Park to host WCC power Gonzaga in a four-game series starting on March 9.
