HOUSTON - The Rice baseball team dropped its opening game at the annual Houston College Classic by falling to Texas 2-0 on Friday night at Minute Maid Park.
Rice threatened to score in both the first and the fourth. In the top of the first, Shane Hoelscher doubled and advanced to third before Texas ended the threat. In the fourth, Hoelscher singled to start the frame and then Skyler Ewing singled to put men on first and second. Texas avoided the danger and did all the scoring in its half of the inning.
Kacy Clemens led off the fourth with a single and advanced to second on a SAC bunt by Andy McGuire. After Jeremy Montalbano popped out, Tres Barrera then doubled down the right field line on a ball that was fair by inches to drive in Clemens for the first run. Ben Johnson, in the next at bat, doubled off the wall in left center to drive in the second run.
The Owls staged a final threat in the ninth with two outs. Aquino singled and advanced to third on a single by Reeves. Teykl, pinch hitting for Byrd, walked to load the bases, but Longhorn closer Nathan Thornhill ended the game with a strikeout.
Rice is now 6-4 on the season. Texas improved to 7-3. The Owls return for game two of the annual tournament on Saturday vs. TCU. Start time is set for 7:05 pm at Minute Maid Park.
