HOUSTON -- Visiting Southeastern Louisiana scored seven runs on just three hits in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 game wide open in an 8-4 win over the Rice baseball Friday evening at Reckling Park in Houston.
The Lions struck for the opening run of the game in the top of the third inning, but Rice quickly battled back to tie the score in the fourth. Sophomore Ford Proctor lined a leadoff double down the right field line, and advanced to third on a single through the left side by Dominic DiCaprio. Proctor sprinted home on an infield grounder to make it 1-1, and the score remained tied after five frames.
In sixth, the Lions sent 13 men to the plate for total of seven runs on just three hits. The Owls issued five walks, committed two errors and hit a batter before getting out of the inning.
Rice continued to fight and quickly answered with three runs in its half of the sixth. With one away, Charlie Warren singled to center and Proctor walked. Sophomore catcher Dominic DiCaprio followed with his first career home run. DiCaprio's round-tripper not cut the margin to four, he raised his season average to a team-leading .467.
In the bottom of the eighth the Blue & Gray loaded the bases with two away to bring the tying run to the plate. The Lions, however, worked out of the jam without allowing any more runs in the 8-4 final.
Rice is now 2-4 on the season. Southeastern Louisiana improved to 3-1. The weekend series between the teams continues through Feb. 26. Saturday's second game is set for a 2 pm start. First pitch for Sunday's series finale is 1 pm.
