HOUSTON -- Six Rice pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts to post the staff's highest single game total in two years, but a pair of Dallas Baptist homers and late walks issued by the Owls helped the No. 23 ranked Patriots claim an 8-4 win Tuesday evening at Reckling Park in Houston.
DBU hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning and added two more in both the third and fifth to take a 5-0 lead. Rice battled back for a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Charlie Warren to score Darryn Sheppard. The Owls then pulled to within two in the bottom of the sixth, 5-3, after a bases-loaded single by Sheppard and a sac fly by Dayne Wunderlich.
Rice allowed a bases-loaded walk to force-in a run in the seventh, but got the score back in the bottom of the frame. Warren alertly sprinted home from third on a wild pitch to keep the margin at two, 6-4. The Owls issued a pair of walks to start the ninth that both came around to score in an 8-4 final. Four of the seven DBU free passes turned into runs. Rice (now 2-3 on the season) also had its share of offensive chances, but finished the night leaving a season-high 12 men on base.
The Owls' homestand continues through Feb. 26. Rice next hosts Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday (Feb. 24). Game times against the Lions are set for 6:30 pm on Friday, 2 pm on Saturday and 1 pm in the series finale on Sunday.
