HOUSTON -- Visiting Arizona scored five runs in the first four innings on the way to a 8-1 win over the Rice baseball team in the season opener for both teams Friday evening at Reckling Park.
After the Wildcats struck for a pair of runs in the top of the second on a pair of hits, Rice fielding miscues allowed three more runs to score over the next two frames.
The Owls got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh with a home run by Tristan Gray. The sophomore from Elkins High School connected on a 1-1 pitch for solo shot to right field. The round-tripper was the fourth of Gray's collegiate career.
The Blue & Gray dropped its season-opener for the second time in as many years. The three-game weekend series continues through the weekend. Rice and Arizona are back for a 4 pm game on Saturday, followed by the series finale at 1 pm on Sunday.
