PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The Rice baseball team posted double-digit runs on 11 hits to claim a 10-3 victory over Stanford in the season-opener for both teams Friday evening in Palo Alto, Calif.
Rice jumped on the scoreboard for a run in the top of the first inning with Skyler Ewing driving-in Keenan Cook for a 1-0 Owl lead. The Cardinal battled back with three runs in the bottom of the second on a three-run homer to left by Zach Hoffpauir.
The Owls exploded for a total of eight runs in the fifth, six and seventh innings. Ewing went on to finish the game with four RBI on three hits. Cook had a double and a triple and scored twice in the victory.
Junior right-hander Jordan Stephens started on the mound and picked up the win with five steady innings, scattering five hits and striking out five. Matt Ditman stole the show and earned a save by firing four scoreless frames against the No. 25 Cardinal and posting an eye-opening 10 strikeouts.
Note the first pitch for Saturday's second game of the weekend series has been moved up to a new start time of 3 pm (Central Time).
