Rice stayed alive in the Baton Rouge Regional on Saturday with a 13-6 win over crosstown foe Texas Southern
2017: Sophomore who was second on the Rice staff in starts (15), innings (83.1) and wins (6)... Finished third on the team with a 4.10 ERA, but maintained a staff-best 3.78 ERA in Conference USA league games… Posted five victories as a starter and was the winning pitcher in one of eight relief appearances totaling 8.2 innings... The Owls were 10-5 overall in Esquivel's starts (the best percentage for an Owl pitcher)... Was just one-third of an inning away from averaging exactly 5.0 innings per start... Fired a career-long 7.2 innings on the road at Western Kentucky, tying for the longest outing by an Owl all season… Posted a career-high nine strikeouts against WKU… Pitched 7.0 strong innings on the road at heavy-hitting, striking out six… Maintained a steady 3.64 ERA in games away from Reckling Park, striking out 41 batters in 47.0 innings… Held hitters to a .202 average once there were two outs already recorded in the inning… Led the staff in ground ball outs (95) and induced a team-leading 12 double plays.
2016: Conference USA Academic Honor Roll; Registered 18 appearances and worked his way into three starts in first season at the Division I level... Made first ten appearances out of the bullpen, including opening day against eventual College World Series runner-up Arizona... Struck out two Arizona batters in Rice debut, including slugger Bobby Dalbec (who went on to be selected by the Red Sox in the fourth-round of the MLB Draft)... Built a resume of eight strikeouts in 10.2 innings over ten relief outings when he was named for first collegiate start, at home against longtime foe Lamar (May 4)... Struck out a career-high six Lamar batters without any walks in a career-long 5.2 innings to earn first Rice win... Both of the next two starts were against heavy-hitting crosstown rival Houston, where he allowed a combined four earned runs in 6.1 total innings... Pitched twice in the C-USA Tournament, including the championship final against Southern Miss where he struck out the only batter he faced in the top of the ninth inning... Last appearance was in relief in the 10-6 road victory at rowdy LSU in the NCAA Regional... Played in the California Collegiate League (Santa Barbara) over the summer.
