2012 Houston College Classic

The Owls finished 2-1 in the 2012 Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park

Wayne Graham said -- "Zech had a good summer after a good freshman year. I like his arm, and he's athletic. We think we added a spiked curve ball that could have a big impact."

At Rice -- 2012: Recorded a sound and solid debut season of Division I baseball... Went 1-0 with a save while maintaining a 2.52 ERA and holding opponents to a .216 batting average in 35.2 innings of work... Averaged 8.1 strikeouts per 9.0 innings and built a steady 2.1-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio... Made 15 appearances and tallied the second-most innings on the staff by an Owl freshman... Began as a reliever and allowed just one run on three hits in his first 8.0 collegiate innings, highlighted by 3.0 hitless frames against the University of Texas downtown at Minute Maid Park... The outings impressed coaches enough to earn his way into two consecutive starting assignments... Made first collegiate start on March 14 against an Arizona team that was ranked No. 9 in the nation and went on to win the National Championship... Fired a career-long 5.0 innings against the Wildcats, allowing just two runs on four hits in a no-decision... Returned the following week to start against Lamar and struck out a career-high five batters in 2.2 innings... Moved back to the bullpen where he thrived in middle relief for the remainder of the season... Made nine relief appearances after the March 21 start, maintaining a 1.80 ERA and striking out 18 in 20.0 innings... Pitched 4.0 shutout innings for first career save against Conference USA foe UAB... Threw 4.0 innings against crosstown foe Houston in the regular season, then pitched another 4.2 relief frames against the Cougars in the opening game of the C-USA Tournament... Played locally for the Houston Wildcats over the summer.

High School -- A 2011 graduate of Waltrip High School in Houston... Selected in the 50th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates... Two-time second team All-Greater Houston selection by Houston5ABaseball.com... Named the Most Valuable Player in District 21-4A as a senior in 2011... Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association (HABCA) 4A All-Star (North team)... Four-time first team all-District 21-4A honoree under head coach Jim Teel... District's Newcomer of the Year as a freshman in 2008... Helped the Rams claim back-to-back district championships and state playoff appearances in 2011 and 2010 with undefeated league records... Went 4-2 overall with a save in eight mound appearances in 2011... Maintained a 0.95 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 37 innings as a senior... Also hit .359 with 27 RBI in 25 games played... Led the staff in innings (30) and strikeouts (25) as a junior, while hitting at a .320 pace with a .507 slugging percentage... Versatile athlete all played football for the Rams under head coach Anthony Zuccarini... Solid student who maintained a 3.75 grade point average... Member of the National Honor Society...
