Rice stayed alive in the Baton Rouge Regional on Saturday with a 13-6 win over crosstown foe Texas Southern
2017: Worked hard to rejoin his teammates on the field after being sidelined early in the 2016 season... Finished the season with 13.0 innings over 10 appearances, striking out eight and a 3.46 ERA... Returned to action in the finale of the C-USA series vs. No. 16 ranked Southern Miss (April 16) and retired the only batter he faced on two pitches... Worked primarily in the bullpen with one midweek start against No. 20 ranked Houston (May 9), then was sensational pitching in relief of Addison Moss before more than 10,000 LSU fans in the elimination game at the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge... Soon silenced the rowdy Tiger crowd with 5.2 shutout innings (to tie a career-high), allowing just one base hit without any walks while striking out a season-high four... Registered a total of 6.2 shutout innings at the NCAA Tournament (including a shutout frame against crosstown foe Texas Southern), where he held all opposing hitters in the postseason to a composite .130 batting average... Ended the year with a stretch of 9.1 consecutive scoreless innings over the final three weeks of the season... Maintained a steady 2.79 ERA when pitching in games away from Reckling Park... Played in the California Collegiate League over the summer (Neptune Beach), going 2-0 with a save and striking out 20 in 22.0 innings in seven appearances.
2016: Conference USA Academic Honor Roll; Had posted two saves and worked his way into three early starts as a true freshman, well on his way to a solid debut season of Division I baseball, before being sidelined for the remainder of the year... Posted a 1.32 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .180 batting average in 13.2 innings... Was pitching so well that he was tabbed to start the big home game against No. 7 ranked TCU, but ended up leaving the contest after facing one batter in the top of the third inning with Rice leading 1-0... Made collegiate debut in relief in the final game of the opening series of the season against eventual College World Series runner-up Arizona, and was almost immediately named to start the very next game against state foe Dallas Baptist two days later... Scattered three hits and a walk while striking out five in 4.2 innings against heavy-hitting DBU, earning a follow-up midweek start at longtime nemesis Sam Houston State... Allowed just two runs, both unearned, in 5.2 frames on the road at Sam Houston to lower his ERA to an austere 0.87 in a combined 10.1 innings... Pitched once in each of the two following weekend series, where he earned saves in outings vs. UCF (March 6) and No. 16 ranked East Carolina (March 13)... Final appearance of the season was then against TCU (March 15)... Proved to be particularly strong when runners were on base (.120 opponents' average) and when two outs were already recorded in the inning (.154).
