Rice 7, New Mexico State 5

Rice defeated New Mexico State 7-5 on February 21

Wayne Graham said - "Chase looked very good pitching late in the fall. I think he has a chance to be one of our starters because he has three good pitches."

Rice -- 2012: Conference USA Academic Honor Roll; Was selected in the 30th round of the Major League draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates... Recovered from a 2011 injury to be one of only two Owls to see action as both a hitter and a pitcher... Played in a total of 26 games with ten starts (six as the designated hitter, two in left field and two on the mound)... Batted second in the lineup in four of the ten starts... Hit a three-run homer as the DH against New Mexico State in first start of the season... Started on the mound the next day against NMSU and pitched a predetermined 1.0 inning in his first pitching appearance in 11 months... Threw a season-high 3.0 frames in a start against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and struck out a season-best four batters in a no-decision... Collected a pair of base hits with a double in the victory over Tennessee downtown at Minute Maid Park... Pitched and served as the DH in the same game in a win over Texas-San Antonio... Sat out three weeks during one stretch before getting a start in left field in the series finale against C-USA foe Marshall, where he responded with three base hits with a double and run-scored... The three-hit day against the Thundering Herd helped him finish with a .429 batting average against C-USA teams... Did his best hitting away from Reckling Park (.375, 6-for-16)... Finished with a total of 10.0 innings pitched... Maintained a strikeouts-to-walks ratio of 9-to-1... Did not allow any runs on just two hits in his final 5.0 frames... Played for Brewster in the Cape Cod League over the summer, where he was a teammate of Evan Rutter... 2011: Appeared in a total of 13 games, and was on the way to a dynamic season as a multi-role player, before suffering a season-ending injury in mid-March... Saw starting action as both a pitcher (four games) and outfielder (four games), with five bench or bullpen appearances... Fired a sensational, complete-game four-hitter against UC-Santa Barbara at AT&T Park in San Francisco (Mar. 13)... Held UCSB to one run on four hits and a walk while striking out four in his second win of the season... Complete game was one of only three by the Owls all year... Started six days later at home against Louisiana Tech and had a perfect game for 4.0 innings, but left the mound after 4.1 in what proved to be his last Rice appearance of the season (Mar. 19)... Notched first career win on the road in a start at nationally-ranked Arizona, allowing three earned runs in 5.2 frames against the Wildcats... Finished with a 5.14 ERA in seven total games, but ERA in four starts was a steady 3.57... Averaged 6.1 strikeouts per nine innings... Maintained a 3.8-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio... Almost half of his total innings (13.1) were against the talented teams that went on to play in the postseason... Pitching was only half the story, finishing with a .313 batting average (5-for-16) that was the third-best mark on the team... Slugging percentage (.500) was second-best on the team... Blasted a pinch-hit three-run homer in his first at bat of the season against Lamar... Tied a career-high with a pair of base hits against NCAA Super Regional-bound Dallas Baptist... Batted as high as third in the order, where he singled-in a run and scored against Louisiana Tech on the day-before he was scheduled to pitch against the Bulldogs... Made two starts in centerfield and two in left... 2010: C-USA Academic Honor Roll; Played in a total of 22 games... One of four Owls who saw action as both a hitter/position player (18 games) and pitcher (four games)... All 11 starts were as the designated hitter, third-most on the team in that role... Nine of his 10 hits were recorded as the starting DH (9-for-38)... Eight of the hits were in home games at Reckling Park... Batted fifth in the order five times and as high as third in the lineup three times... Helped keep the offense going when the Owls were threatening, batting 9-for-25 (.360) with men on base and 7-for-19 (.368) with runners in scoring position... Tied for third on the team with Anthony Rendon for hits with the bases-loaded (four hits in just five at bats)... Longest hitting streak was five games... Collected a career-best two hits in a game twice, in games against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and eventual NCAA Tournament participant Lamar...
